Newfoundlanders and Labradorians Against Student Debt (NLASD)

We aren't asking for a free ride from the Government in paying back our loans, but what we are asking for is to have the interest eliminated. What is worth more to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador? Stopping out-migration of educated young people? Or the money the government receives in interest off of our Newfoundland and Labrador student loans?

    Petition Government

Today is the beginning of Premier Williams' final year in office. This means that we are one year away from an election, and as such we have a great opportunity to make things happen, and fix this mess once and for all. Please take your time and sign this petition. It will be delivered to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador six months before the election.

    Determination WILL make a difference.

NOTE: After you sign the petition, you'll see something about donations to the company that hosts the online petition. Please ignore this as the post has already gone through. Thanks

    Hello All!!

I am in total agreeance in this petition and what it is trying to accomplish. I am currently paying $500 per month back to the government and I am hardly making any impact om my principal. Of course there was no way I could afford to live and pay this loan in NL so I am currently living in ALberta where I am able to pay all expenses but of course contributing to the Alberta economy. With such high out migration, the NL goverment must be creative in ways to keeps its young educated people and this is a perfect way!

    Hi,
I think this is an excellent example of social activism! Keep up the good work. I too am among those with increasing student debt. As I graduate this year, I don’t have the option to stay home and work because the loan payments are too high. Student loan debt has a huge impact on the hopes and dreams of many students, because loan payments are so high, they cannot start a family after school or buy a house to start their new life in. After so many years of university, I think life should look more promising.
The reality of this situation is that Newfoundland looses talented young individuals everyday due to student debt. It is a sad reality and one that should be challenged.

    Hello,

I also agree with this petition. I graduated this year from a 5 year degree program at MUN. Starting the end of November I am required to pay $440/mth for student loans. This payment is more than my car and insurance payment combined! Through work terms I had the advantage of being able to save and pay for three semesters myself however while this is great I still came out owing $35,000 (before interest). After my ten years of paying 440/mth in total my education will cost me $60000. The interest rate is crazy at 8.5%. The real issue is, I cannot find decent work here in this province. Yes I can find work in my area of study but the pay is sooo low in comparision to other provinces that it just dosn't make sense to stay here. While I take pride in being a Newfoundlander I am disappointed that I cannot afford to stay here and enjoy the province Im proud to call home!!!!

Sad situation for all of us poor students/graduates.

P.S I also wanted to point out to all you soon to be loan payers that the 6 month grace period (time from graduation to repayment time) IS NOT FREE. When I received my loan payments I noticed that I was charged $1500 of interest for those six months. As a student anxious to receive my loan I guess I forgot to read the fine print. Outstanding amount of money to pay in interest for a useless 6months grace!!! If I had known what I know now.....I would have started repayment immediatley....the Gov't and/or financial institutions wouldnt have received an extra penney from me!
    My advice!!!!!

Currently I am paying $200 a month ON INTEREST alone for my student loans. As a single mother and a student, to make my payments, I am literally having to take the food out of my daughters mouth.

I completely aggree with this petition and everything it stands for. I graduated from CNA in 2003 and have since then been completing my BBA through distance with MUN and am only now fortunate enough to be able to find a job in my field. But because of my income I will not beble to be elligible for interest relief and because my loan payments are beginning the end of this month at 575.00 per month I will have no other choice but to give up my job. I can't afford that payment along with the other payments I have. This is so unfair. I worked very hard to obtain the education I have to be able to get the job I have but now it all means nothing if I have to give up my job to find a minimum wage job to be able to qualify for interest relief. I think it's time for the government to step and help us fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians out.

I convocated with a Bachelor of Science then went on to pursue a post grad diploma only to find out that the max here in NL it will get me is $18/h. Not bad, eh? Well, after 6 years of student loans it certainly is bad with a $650 loan payment a month! That’s not including renting an apartment, because of course, I am unable to get approved for a mortgage because I owe too much on student loans. Of course a car is needed to get to work because not everywhere has the luxury of buses not to mention foolish and unnecessary things such as FOOD. Two years payment on my student loans left me owing more than I started with!! Then I have to watch tv and listen to “educated” people wonder why Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are leaving the province. Is it really a mystery people?? I was richer living off a student loan than I was working. Now, at almost 30 years old I find myself back in the vicious cycle again pursuing another degree here in Newfoundland to hopefully increase my income and pay off some debt. Oh the web we weave. Was it really my dream to return to University again at almost 30 years old and to be driving a 9-year-old car with 250,000km? Yes, that’s exactly what I had in mind when I decided to get an education. Or maybe having to return to school to get another degree in the province while my husband had to move out of province to make a living was my main goal. Why that’s every girl’s dream. Sarcasm aside, the fact remains that this province does not support its residents in getting an education and certainly do not value an education. The unfortunate thing is that this is home, always will be. I, unfortunately, will not have the opportunity to allow my future children the privilege of experiencing the beauty of this province that I had. I was always a strong believer in obtaining an education and continuing education you make me reconsider. This is just disheartening - Renée Fagan
